In a gilded Neo-Baroque decorative frame, the upper frame strip with a central, plastic royal crown between laurel and oak leaves, on which is an artist-identifying, dating and titling brass plate. In 1902, Friedrich August was appointed commanding general of the XII. (I. Royal Saxon) Army Corps. The present portrait with two stars identifies him as General of the Infantry according to the Prussian-Saxon military convention. Support with a tear lower left, unprofessionally glued, with a larger discoloration underneath. Paint layer with several, partly color-incorrect retouches, isolated, slight soiling, rabbet area with lesions. Frame partly overpainted, with isolated small material losses and open mitres. Dimensions: 70 x 56.5 cm, frame 100 x 75.5 cm. Johanna Scholtz-Plagemann 1856 Dresden – 1927 Pirna Pirna portrait painter, born in Dresden. Through her marriage to the book and art dealer Ernst Louis Scholtz, she came to Pirna in 1889. The focus of her artistic work was initially primarily portrait painting (mostly copies after daguerreotypes, photographs or paintings). Later she achieved great skill in landscape painting. Among her Pirna patrons was the industrial family Haensel (owners of the chemical factory for the production of essential oils and essences), for whom many portraits were created. For Gustav Haensel, the artist designed the certificate of honor in 1904 on behalf of the city on the occasion of his appointment as an honorary citizen of the city of Pirna. Very personal contacts existed with Prince Friedrich Karl of Hesse, brother-in-law of the Emperor. The correspondence shows the high esteem the prince had for the artist.
