Otto Westphal - Otto Westphal ”Mrs. A[nna]. von Arnim née von Berg”. 1920.. Otto Westphal 1878 Leipzig – 1975 Dresden Oil on painting cardboard. Signed twice ”Otto Westphal.” lower right. Verso extensively titled, inscribed, dated and signed again ”painted Kriebstein (Castle) November 1920 Otto Westphal” as well as with various numberings in lead. Framed in a white and gold-coloured panel frame with a textile insert. Provenance: Jutta Hartmann Collection, Bautzen; Estate of Otto Westphal, Dresden / Bautzen. Erik von Arnim-Kriebstein (1873 Kriebstein Castle – 1945 in Russian captivity on Rügen) and his wife Anna (1875 ? – last mentioned 1947), née von Berg, were the last owners of Kriebstein Castle in Central Saxony before the expropriation in 1945 by the Soviet Army. The painting has not been unframed. Paint layer with vertical cracks. Frame with signs of use, with open mitres. Dimensions: 44 x 32.5 cm, frame 55 x 44 cm. Otto Westphal 1878 Leipzig – 1975 Dresden 1894–96 attended the Kassel School of Applied Arts and 1896–99 the Krefeld Weaving School. From 1899, turned to fine art, sojourn in Berlin. 1900 presented a tapestry at the Paris World's Fair. 1903 trip to Danzig. 1904–07 studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Richard Müller and Carl Bantzer. From 1905, connected with various art associations, e.g., the Märzbund, and active exhibition participation, probably including at Kunstsalon Emil Richter and Kunstausstellung Kühl. Member of the Goppeln and Willingshausen artists' colonies. 1911 married Julia Remond (approx. 1871–1925, from Yverdon near Geneva). 1914–16 participated in World War I. Study visits in Hesse, Danzig, and Switzerland, among others. 1924 focused on wall paintings and mosaics in Ravenna, Italy. 1929 wall paintings for the Roman Garden of the Gruga in Essen. From 1930 worked in Pompeii for the Archaeological Institute of Rome. 1931 married his second wife Margarete. In the 1940s, assistant to Fritz Beckert at the TH Dresden. Solo exhibitions, among others, in 1958 at the Heinrich Kühl Art Exhibition in Dresden and in 1971 at the Albertinum of the State Art Collections Dresden. Subsequently, a touring exhibition in East Germany and other countries.
