Willy Kriegel - Willy Kriegel, Pig's Head. 1954.. Willy Kriegel 1901 Dresden – 1966 Starnberg Oil on wood and assemblage (red plastic gemstone). Monogrammed and dated lower left ”K. 54”. In a white panel frame. Paint layer in the upper right background area with two small scuffs and dull spots. Superficial inconspicuous scratches. A horizontal pressure mark (notch) right middle. Rabbet area clearly scuffed. Before the painting process, edges and border area circumferentially mounted with adhesive tape, partially detached. Retouches in the lower area likely by the artist's hand. Frame with signs of wear, lower right with drying crack, verso with chipping. Dimensions: 71 x 57 cm, Frame: 92 x 77 cm. Willy Kriegel 1901 Dresden – 1966 Starnberg 1915–23 Apprenticeship as a pattern designer, then studied painting at the Dresden Art Academy with Ferdinand Dorsch, Otto Gussmann and Otto Hettner, among others. Master student of Oskar Kokoschka. 1923/24 and 1938 study trips to Italy. From 1928 solo exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Zittau and Chemnitz. 1928–34 Stay in Mallorca. 1931 Dürer Prize of the city of Nuremberg, 1936 participation in the Venice Biennale. 1937 Gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition, simultaneously defamed by the Nazis as ”degenerate”. 1942 Moved to Schluchsee/Black Forest, 1953 moved to Feldafing/Bavaria. From 1964 teaching activity in Cologne. Works represented in: Lindenau-Museum Altenburg, Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, Städt. Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Städt. Kunstsammlungen Freital and Städt. Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, among others.
