Max Uhlig - Max Uhlig ”Summer landscape near Penzlin”. 1978–1983.. Max Uhlig 1937 Dresden – lives in Helfenberg (Dresden) Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right ”Uhlig 83”. Verso titled, signed again and dated ”Max Uhlig 1978–83” as well as location-marked and extensively dated ”Tempelberg, 8.VI.83”. Framed in a narrow, white-painted, nailed molding by the artist. Since the early 1970s, Max Uhlig repeatedly spent the summer months in Kruckow near Penzlin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 26 km southwest of Greifswald. South of Kruckow and Penzlin lies the so-called Tempelberg, a hill where a Neolithic sacrificial site with stone settings made of boulders could be proven. From 1970, the artist also turned to painting, which Friedrich Dieckmann characterized as follows: ”With a telescopic view, his eye cuts out a landscape detail across long distances, which restarts that process of variation, whose result can do without reference to the vine or the bush or the treetop, but not the impulse.” (cited after Friedrich Dieckmann, Urknäuel und Weltverhau. Wolfgang Holler reported on the plein air painter: ”Anyone who sees Uhlig painting outdoors may initially be surprised. There he is with sometimes huge canvases, brushes, pots, tubes drawn into nature and acts there like in a ritual dance in front of his canvas, rhythmically, staccato-like, with energetic grip and full concentration.” (cited after Wolfgang Holler: Zum Beispiel Landschaft. Partially with very small retouches, especially upper left, upper right. Verso with studio traces. Frame minimally bumped. Dimensions: 74.5 x 149 cm, frame 75.5 x 150 cm. Since 1964 freelance work. Since 1990 member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund (Association of German Artists) and founding member of the Sächsische Akademie der Künste (Saxon Academy of Arts). 1995–2002 professor for painting and graphic arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden. Awarded several national and international prizes, including 1987 Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis of the Academy of Arts of the GDR, 1991 2nd prize of the 21st International Biennale of São Paulo and Gold Medal of the 10th Norsk Internasjonal Grafikk Biennale Fredrikstad, 1998 Hans-Theo-Richter-Preis and Sächsischer Verdienstorden (Saxon Order of Merit), 2003 Kunstpreis der Landeshauptstadt Dresden (Art Prize of the State Capital Dresden) and the Kunstpreis der Künstler (Artists' Art Prize) at the Große Kunstausstellung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf 2006.
