Sauermann - Collection of Autographs - Sauermann, Ernst Eduard Friedrich (Art historian, museum director; Flensburg 1880 - 1956 Kiel). Collection of autographs containing over 90 handwritten letters and 4 handwritten postcards by Ernst Sauermann, approximately 69 handwritten letters by his wife Maria Sauermann, as well as further letters from his daughters Gerda and Telse, and letters to E. Sauermann from various individuals such as historians, publishers, and public figures, some with postmarked envelopes. Also included are 1 sketchbook, several photographs, 3 handwritten household ledgers, and other items. Dated between 1904 and 1949. Various formats. Following the sudden death of his father in 1904, Ernst Sauermann became director of the Flensburg Museum, and later director of the Thaulow Museum in Kiel. He was also active in the local heritage movement and historic preservation, wrote publications on the architecture of Schleswig-Holstein, chaired the Association for Art and Crafts in Flensburg, and, from 1911, published the Schleswig-Holstein Art Calendar. Sauermann's letters from 1904 are addressed to his parents in Flensburg. At that time, he was working at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg and reported on his situation there, contacts within the museum sector, research on exhibits (sometimes including small drawings), and the development of art in Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark. Other letters, mostly addressed to his daughter Irmgard, are of a more personal nature. Correspondence addressed to Sauermann includes letters concerning the death of his son, who was killed in action during the Second World War. These include letters of condolence from, among others, Julius A. Konietzko, J. Fr. Teichert, Wilhelm Darboven, Elsa Essberger, Volquart Pauls, Sigrid Thurm, and Ernst Stoffers.
