Franck Family Register (University of Jena) - Family registers. Album Amicorum of Johann Friedrich Carl Franck (also Frank), law student at the University of Jena. With 20 handwritten entries on approximately 180 leaves. With 3 watercolor drawings and 1 colored copper engraving. Mostly Jena and Bürgel, 1760-63. Oblong octavo. Contemporary gilt-stamped leather binding with gilt edges on three sides (somewhat rubbed and bumped, head and tail of spine with losses). Franck was born in 1743 in Thalbürgel, Thuringia. His grandmother, Maria Dorothea Lange, née Vulpius, was a great-aunt of Goethe's wife, Christiane Vulpius. In 1760, Franck matriculated at the University of Jena, presumably to study law. The family album was dedicated to this occasion and begun on that date. Franck later became a councilor and court and district advocate for the Prince of Schwarzburg in Thalbürgel. The album contains entries by his father, Tobias Ernst Frank (1706–1780; district commissioner and regional judge), and by Johann Ernst Immanuel Walch, 'acad. Rector' (1725-1778; philologist and geologist), the pastors Ernst Friedrich Boettiger and Adrian Gottlieb Kaestner, the friends and fellow students Samuel Anton Georg Klopstock (1741-1794; collegiate and chamber advocate in Quedlinburg), Christoph Salomo, Johann Ernst Ludwig and Johann Augustin Traugott Linck, Christian Ludwig Leberecht Degen (pastor in Meyhen), Johann Christoph Opitz, and others. 1 Drawing shows the coat of arms of the Frank family.
