Uhde - Drawings from Spain - Architecture.- Travel Memories from Spain (portfolio title). Collection of 58 pen drawings and 2 colored watercolors by Constantin Uhde. Circa 1890. Mostly monogrammed. Sizes approximately 20 x 18 cm to 55 x 40 cm. Loose in a contemporary flexible canvas portfolio (damaged, front cover loose). The Braunschweig architect Constantin Uhde (1836-1905) was a professor of classical architecture at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig. Uhde was strongly influenced by Gottfried Semper, and his buildings in Braunschweig are based on models from the Italian and German Renaissance. He spent time in Spain and Portugal in 1888-89. The drawings depict aqueducts of Alcantara, Tarragona, and Mérida; the Cathedral of Jaén; details of the cathedrals of Granada, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, León, Burgos, and others; Castell de la Mola; Coca Castle; various orders of columns and cornices; the University Library of Coimbra; the interior of a Moorish house in Tangier; and more. Each drawing has a handwritten title.
