The Belgian-British industrialist John Cockerill (1790-1840), together with his brother James, built the largest iron foundry and machine factory in Europe around 1820. Its headquarters and central plant were located at Seraing Castle near Liège. The John Cockerill Group, a machinery and plant engineering company, still operates there today. Cockerill is considered one of the pioneers of the railway industry on the European mainland and supplied rails and locomotives for the first railway line from Brussels to Mechelen. The plates depict extraction, conveying, factory, and machine tools, steamship engines, locomotives and railway equipment, waterwheels, paper and grain mills, among other things. Volume 1 has a small damp stain at the beginning and end of the upper spine.
