Original silk binding (rubbed) over wooden boards with gilt metal fittings in an original leather slipcase (leather edges minimally rubbed) with partial reproduction of the ornate front cover, an intarsia depicting a crucifixion scene, and metal borders with imitations of gemstones, pearls, and enamel inlays on cork. One of 150 numbered copies (GA 850) with a decorative cover from the cork edition. The Echternach Gospels are considered the masterpiece of Ottonian book illumination. It is also known as the 'Golden Gospels' (Codex Aureus) because it is entirely decorated with gold leaf lettering and gilded miniatures. Without the commentary volume.
