Egyptian Amethyst Head Pendant, Ptolemaic period 300 BCE-30 BC
Alexandria, Egypt amethyst head pendant Ptolemaic period 300 BC - 30 BC. Mounted on an old Lucite stand with a label affixed to the rear. An amethyst stone carved in the form of a head with almond eyes, wrinkled cheeks and braided hair parted at the middle. The reverse of the flat stone indicated this may have been used as an amulet recessed into a setting. The reverse is carved flat with the edge slightly recessed for placement into a setting. The most similar likeness to this face appears to be Berenike IV 58-55BCE or Berenike (Bernice II) II of Cyrene 269-221BCE daughter of Magas, King of Byrene whose marriage to Ptolemy III Euergetes reunited her country with Egypt. Size 1 1/2" H x 1 1/2" W
Ex-Bel Air collection, Ex-private Los Angeles collection
Condition: old chip to nose, wear and age signs to the reverse and throughout. The mounting is quite old with the discoloration to the mounting and adhesives used.
