Russian or Eastern European War Hammer, late 16th C.
Fine Russian or eastern European war hammer mounted on an old shaft likely during it's working life, 16th century. Intricately forged and chiseled war hammer in iron and with square face and long down tapered rear terminating spike. Hammer square with pointed ends and carved in multiple layers of incised lines and levels, the central section affixed to the wood shaft with replaced rivets and incised in angled lines, rear spike is carved as well with grooved recesses to corners creating a multisided shape. Size 33" L, hammer 8 1/2" L
Very fine example of a Russian war-hammer and almost exact example is published in the book "Russian Arms and Armour, Leningrad 1982" listed as illustrated item 41 b (Property of Prince - Vasily- Ivanovich - Turenin - Abolensky)
