Scarce Fortress ”Wheellock” Trap Door Alarm Rifle, Circa 1580-1640 - Antique late 16th to early 17th c. 1580-1640 wheellock trap door or alarm gun to ward off grave robbers and body snatchers. Body marked with B.H.Z.S” and ”N.58”, oak stock, in good working mechanical order. Possibly the earliest known example. Size 50” L, barrel 37” L, 80 caliber Wheellock long rifle, dark brown wood stock of typical form with the noted variation of a pierced hole to the rear of the lock for engagement of a securing pin and mounting. The trigger mechanism with a unique system of wire and steel allowing the trigger to be attached at both ends for engagement. Lock mechanism with light engraving and some chiseling to the hammer spring. Ex-Southern California Collection Condition: Wear commensurate with age.
