Philippines Headhunters Axe, circa 1970s - Oceania, Philippines, Igorot headhunters axe from the 3rd quarter of the 20th century. Flat wide face with a short rear spike. Socketed to the shaft with a steel covering. Light colored rattan at the top of the shaft and carved to the wood shaft with finger indentations for handling in use. Size 20 1/2” H x 9 1/4” W, blade 4 1/2” W Igorot or mountaineer in English refers to a large group of multiple ethnic peoples in the mountain region of Northern Luzon. The headhunters or executioners axe is a sharp bladed weapon constructed of hammered steel and found use in carving wood or other daily activities in addition to its namesake. Condition: Light oxidization, some looseness to the rattan, wear commensurate with age and use.
