Philippine Moro Round 'Taming' Shield, 18th-19th C. - Philippines Archipelago, Southern Philippines, Mindanao 18th or 19th century. Constructed of wood cane (rattan) and red / black pigment with some looseness to the connection points and original material. The shield has a deep reddish black pigment over the wood construction and has a typical Moro round shape with a raised central point. Behind the central knob the 5 point star of Islam is inset in brass. The reverse carved all from one piece with a larger circular round opening for the arm to secure and another carved handle for grip and maneuverability. Excellent example of a shield in a very good state of conservation.
