Massive Chevron Trade Bead Necklace, Cameroon - Central Africa, Cameroon, Bamileke peoples, Glass Bead Necklace, 20th century Composed of a striking strand of large, barrel-form glass beads in deep cobalt blue, each finely decorated with crisp zigzag and chevron motifs in white and red, centered by a prominent, oversized bead of particularly bold scale. The composition is further accented by a pair of large, smooth, cream-colored shell elements positioned near the terminals, lending visual balance and contrast to the vivid polychrome glass.Such necklaces are associated with the Bamileke peoples of Cameroon, where boldly colored beadwork has long functioned as a marker of prestige and ceremonial display.
