Yellow Krobo Powder Glass Trade Bead Necklace - West Africa, Ghana, Krobo Glass Trade Bead Necklace, 20th century Composed of a strand of large, irregularly formed powder-glass beads in a warm ochre-yellow ground, each decorated with scattered polychrome inclusions in deep red, blue, and brown tones. The beads exhibit the softly granular surface and matte translucency characteristic of Krobo production, traditionally made through the recycling of glass fragments and pulverized material fired in clay molds.The varied forms and subtle differences in decoration lend the strand a rhythmic, organic quality, while the bold scale of the beads provides strong visual presence. Such beads have long been produced in the Krobo region of Ghana and widely worn as markers of identity, status, and adornment within both ceremonial and everyday contexts. Length: 20 in.
