Bidspirit auction | Ethiopian Magic Healing Scroll Pendants
Ethiopian Magic Healing Scroll Pendants - Ethiopia, 19th - 20th century A group of three Ethiopian protective amulets, or kitabe, each formed as a small leather pendant enclosing a tightly rolled parchment scroll intended for personal spiritual protection. Miniature scrolls are composed of vellum, likely goat or sheep skin, carefully inscribed, rolled, and sewn within their fitted leather cases. Such amulets were worn or kept close to the body in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, where they served as intimate objects of devotion and safeguarding. The present group is notable for its strong ethnographic character and the appealing survival of their original hand-worked construction, the leather surfaces showing honest age and use consistent with their intended purpose. A compelling and authentic small group of devotional artifacts. Dimensions: 4 in. each Count: 3 pieces Ex-New Mexico Estate. Collection Amassed Prior to 1995
