Benin-Style Bronze Leopard Aquamanile - Nigeria / West Africa, probably 20th century. Lost-wax cast bronze or brass vessel in the form of a standing leopard, the body decorated throughout with incised circular spot motifs over a finely stippled ground. The head with large leaf-form ears, arched brows, stylized eyes, and open mouth; the top of the head fitted with a moveable lid. Arched tail and loop-form elements above the back. Dark brown patina with areas of oxidation and surface wear. Size: 18” L. Weight: 16 lb. 10.4 oz. Ex-Tennessee Estate by Descent. Family collection of an esteemed diplomat and ambassador amassed during travel and work circa 1960-1990s in the medical field providing charitable advanced medical care throughout the African continent and internationally. Condition: age-related surface wear, oxidation, patina variation, and scattered casting irregularities. Minor losses, abrasions, and possible old repairs or bending to projecting elements.
