Nok-Style Terracotta Head - West Africa, probably Nigeria, Nok culture or later in the Nok style, probably circa 500 BCE?200 CE or later. Terracotta head modeled with a rounded face, deeply recessed circular eyes, a short projecting nose, and an open mouth above a pointed chin or beard-like terminal. The head is framed by a cap-like coiffure or headdress, with incised linear ornament visible along the side and crown. The modeling is direct and spare, with the facial features reduced to strong geometric forms characteristic of Nok and related West African terracotta traditions. The surface retains a reddish earthen tone with granular texture and scattered mineral accretions. Presented on a custom black display stand. Losses to the lower neck and rear portions, with surface wear, abrasions, small chips, and minor losses throughout. Earthen encrustation and age-related surface irregularities present.
