West African Terracotta Head with Coffee-Bean Eyes - West Africa, possibly Niger River Valley / Sahel region, Bura, Koma, or related terracotta tradition, probably medieval period or later. Terracotta head modeled with an elongated cylindrical neck and a compact rounded head, the face with narrow raised ”coffee-bean” eyes, a projecting nose, small parted lips, and lateral ear or headdress elements. The upper head is framed by outward-projecting horn-like forms and a raised band or cap-like border. The surface is rough and granular, with a reddish earthen tone and scattered darker accretions. The simplified facial treatment and distinctive recessed eyes suggest comparison with West African Sahelian terracotta traditions rather than Nok sculpture. Presented on a later custom black display stand. Height: 13.5 in. overall with stand Ex-Los Angeles Estate Condition: Fragmentary, as shown, with losses to the lower neck and extremities of the projecting elements. Surface wear, chips, abrasions, earthen deposits, and age-related encrustation throughout. Mounted on a later custom stand.
