Felix Ziem Oil on Canvas Enchanted Lake (B.1821) - A fine and large painting by Felix Francois Georges Philbert Ziem, (1821-1911), France. Venice is the subject of his finest paintings. He was well travelled, visiting Algiers, Austria, Belgium, Constantinople, Egypt and other countries but Venice is where he returned to repeatedly. He was an active participant in the Paris Salons. He made frequent trips to Barbizon where he lived in a circus caravan while painting. I can see the orientalism in his work. The subject matter of the lake is most certainly Lake Como and the The Villa Monastero, which was previously built from an earlier convent and is just breathtaking. He painted the painting while traveling two years abroad from 1846 - 1848. Measures approx. 53.5”l x 31”h (viewable). Encased in a gilt frame decorated with floral motif; some loss to frame due to age, some pieces are accounted for. Condition of painting is as seen in the pictures with small repair, but shows well. It will need a cleaning and possibly has other needs as well. Provenance: Allentown, PA living estate, From the collection of a prominent Lehigh Valley doctor and his wife. He passed and she downsized to California, it was part of the family's collection for 40 plus years Including frame, measures approx. 62”w x 40”h x 5” deep.
