Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he studied at the Cleveland School of Art before serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, where he designed costumes for the service's entertainment division. After the war, Brastoff established a studio in Los Angeles, creating vibrant ceramic pieces with bold patterns, metallic glazes, and modernist forms. His work gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, attracting celebrity clients and leading to a successful production line. Brastoff's distinctive designs remain highly recognizable and influential in mid-century modern art and design.
