Alxender Calder ”Spring Carnival” Lithograph - Plate signed and dated lower right Frame: 24” x 32” Image: 17” x 24”   Provenance: Merrill Chase   Condition: There are some small chips to the frame and a bend to the silver strip along the bottom edge; image is in good condition.   Bio:  Alexander Calder (American, 1898–1976) was a pioneering sculptor best known for inventing the mobile—kinetic sculptures that move with air currents or touch—and for his static “stabiles.” Born in Pennsylvania, Calder studied mechanical engineering before attending the Art Students League in New York. His innovative approach combined engineering precision with abstract form, using wire, sheet metal, and bold color to create works defined by movement and balance. A central figure in 20th-century modernism, Calder’s work spanned sculpture, painting, jewelry, and monumental public commissions that redefined spatial composition in art.
