Active from the 1950s onward, he combined painterly gesture with recognizable imagery drawn from history, popular culture, and personal narratives. Rivers worked across painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media, often incorporating text, photographic references, and layered compositions. His experimental approach and use of everyday subjects positioned him as an important transitional artist between expressionist abstraction and the emerging Pop movement.
