Born in 1951, Slonem developed a distinct style rooted in bold color, layered surfaces, and repetitive imagery influenced by his interest in nature, spirituality, and historical ornamentation. Working primarily in oil on canvas and board, he frequently incorporates incised cross-hatching that adds texture and dimensionality to his compositions. Slonem’s work aligns with other postwar American painters exploring color and gestural abstraction, including artists like Sam Gilliam and Larry Rivers.
