After immigrating to the United States in 1947, he studied at Michigan State University and later taught at several institutions, including the University of California, San Diego. Scanga’s work often combined found objects, religious iconography, and references to classical and folk traditions, creating layered pieces that blended personal history with broader cultural themes. He is associated with the Funk Art movement and developed a distinctive practice that integrated wood, glass, and metal into sculptural forms, frequently addressing spirituality, mythology, and identity.
