Artist Bio: Roger Godchaux (1878–1958) was a French animalier sculptor and painter who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He worked firmly in the tradition established by Antoine-Louis Barye and continued by Rembrandt Bugatti, modeling his subjects from direct observation at the Jardin des Plantes menagerie in Paris. Godchaux is best known for his bronzes of big cats, elephants, and other African game, characterized by close anatomical study and a restrained, naturalistic finish. He represents the final flowering of the great French animalier movement in the first half of the 20th century.
