A mid-Victorian mahogany balloon-back nursing chair - A mid-Victorian balloon-back nursing chair in the Rococo Revival style, dating to the mid-19th century. The frame is constructed from solid mahogany with a rich grain and deep patina. The design features a rounded balloon back with a carved foliate and scroll-work cresting at the top and similar carved scroll-work at the base of the back supports. The chair is raised on front cabriole legs with carved scroll-work at the knees and feet, terminating in castors, with simple splayed legs to the rear. The back is deep-buttoned and the seat is padded, both upholstered in a cream-toned damask fabric with a repeating floral and scrolling foliate pattern, finished with a coordinating decorative gimp trim. A modern auction label bearing the digits 4736 is located on the upper left of the wooden back frame. No other maker's marks or attributions are visible.
