Bidspirit auction | A mid-20th-century P&O Line cabin

A mid-20th-century P&O Line cabin trunk relating to the S.S. Corfu and Singapore Naval Base - A rectangular cabin trunk of mid-20th-century construction, featuring a textured brown exterior reinforced with vertical wooden battens and metal rivets. The trunk is fitted with metal corner protectors, two outer latches, and a central brass-toned lock plate. The exterior bears several hand-painted inscriptions in white paint, identifying the owner as Mr. Richards, Inspector of Shipwrights (abbreviated as INSPTR. SHPTS.), stationed at the Singapore Naval Base. Additional inscriptions include s.s. Corfu and Cabin No. 328/9. Two partial paper labels are affixed to the front, including a Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) luggage label featuring the blue and white house flag and a fragment with the visible text AND ORIENT. The S.S. Corfu was a P&O liner launched in 1931 which served the UK-Far East route and operated as an Armed Merchant Cruiser and troopship during the Second World War before returning to civilian service in 1947.
