Large Burmese Kalaga Shwe Chi Doe Embroidered Wall Hanging with Five Elephants - A large Burmese Kalaga tapestry, also known as shwe chi doe, featuring five high-relief medallions. The textile is constructed on a dark brown satin-weave base fabric and is lined with a plain black fabric on the reverse. The decoration is executed using the traditional shwe chi doe technique, which involves raised embroidery using gold and silver-coloured metallic-wrapped threads, sequins, and glass beads to create a three-dimensional effect. Each of the five central medallions depicts a white elephant, an auspicious symbol in Southeast Asian Buddhist culture, rendered in raised silver-toned thread with red accents. The medallions are set within a dense field of metallic thread embroidery in scrolling floral and foliate motifs. The border is embellished with metallic cord and circular sequins. The edge is finished with a series of integrated fabric loops for hanging.
