Bidspirit auction | Pair of silver-plated Christofle fruit

Pair of silver-plated Christofle fruit bowls, decorated with the monogram TM (Tafari Makonnen). Before being crowned emperor, he was known as Ras Tafari (a title that gave rise to the name of the Rastafari movement). He became His Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I, the last emperor of Ethiopia. These pieces came directly from his palace in Harar. Previously sold at the famous auction house Puttick & Simpson's in 1936. In May 1936, Mussolini's fascist forces invaded Ethiopia, forcing Emperor Haile Selassie into exile in England. During his exile, many goods, treasures, and objects from imperial palaces were looted. The engravings on these pieces were made by the buyer or the auction house at the time, to record and attest to their authenticity and the impressive provenance of the pieces. Dimensions: 0.295 x 0.235.
