Inspired by these 'blank canvases' Picasso set about painting a series of imaginary portraits over the next four months in simple brilliant colors, many referring back to Picasso own earlier images: Balzac, Shakespeare and the dandies of 17th Holland.Written in pencil ”Exemplaire hors commerce” - often abbreviated as HC, translates to Not for sale.
