The Dutch began to make wax-resist imitations of saritas for export, but they are less complex in their patterning than the Torajan originals. Considered to be sacred, these cloths are used in Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia in ceremonies and rituals, such as weddings, funerals, and rice festivals: they adorn the tongkonan (the traditional house). Images of sacred buffalo, stylistic human forms, dogs, tadpole or spermlike figures and sacred star center motif. Size: 216” x 13”. Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
