Rare Early Etruscan Terracotta Banqueteer - Etruria, ca. 500 to 264 BCE, likely earlier in the period. A ceramic figure of a reclining woman at a banquet. The figure shows her sitting on a couch with one arm draped over her legs; she leans against the single arm of the couch with the elbow of her other arm, the picture of relaxation. She wears a long article of clothing and a veil hanging down from a very tall, conical headdress. She holds a horn-like drinking vessel close to her chest. The banquet was one of the most frequently-depicted activities in Classical art: a pan-Mediterranean tradition of opulent eating and drinking alongside music, dance, poetry, and conversation. We know that this piece dates to later in the Etruscan period because in the early part of the period, banquet scenes show Etruscans seated rather than reclining. The banquet also had some associations with the dead, with tomb art often showing people posed to eat and drink. This figure was probably made to be placed into a tomb.
