Very Fine 19th C. Japanese Aikuchi-Mounted Tanto with Lacquered Saya and Kozuka/Kogatana - Japanese tanto in aikuchi mounts, the black lacquer saya embellished with gold maki-e style vine/foliate decoration and fitted with ornate metal mounts (including a decorated end cap, with chrysanthemum-style roundels and scrolling ground). The tsuka is wrapped in dark ito over samegawa, with applied menuki and textured fuchi/kashira. The blade is housed with a yellow-metal habaki and shows a visible hamon line. Accompanied by a matching kozuka (utility-knife handle) with figural engraving, and the associated kogatana (small knife blade), the tang bearing characters Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 14”, Blade length : 9 1/4”. ~ .
