Russian Soviet WWII Medal For Bravery, Numbered 97317~ Early Rectangular suspension - Russian Soviet Medal ”For Bravery” Numbered 97317. Type 1. Rectangular suspension. From the date of its institution on 17 October 1938 until the Decree of 19 June 1943, the first type of the Medal ”For Courage” was awarded. The medal was fitted with a rectangular suspension mount featuring a slotted frame in its lower section. The mount was covered with a red ribbon. The upper end of the ribbon folded over the top edge of the mount, while the lower end passed through the slot at the bottom. In the first variant of this type, the ribbon was secured to the mount by means of a thin quadrangular plate with a central hole and four prongs along the edges. In the second and subsequent variants of this type, the ribbon was secured by a quadrangular plate with a central hole (without prongs) and a small hexagonal nut. On the reverse side of the mount there was a threaded post and a round screwback nut for attachment to clothing. The medal’s suspension loop is made of silver and is soldered to the medal. The serial number is located horizontally at the lower part of the reverse. The suspension mount and screwback nut are identical to those of the previous variant. The threaded post may be made either of silver or of bronze. The serial number is applied by stamping. The letters in the inscriptions ”ZA OTVAGU” (”For Courage”) and ”CCCP” are filled not with enamel but with lacquer. The lacquer layer is thinner, and its upper boundary is usually below the surface level of the medal. Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
