Rare Early Russian Soviet WWII Medal For Combat Service, Numbered 5646 ~ Type 1, Var 1 - Early Russian Soviet WWII Medal For Combat Service, Numbered 5646. Rare Type 1, Variant 1 From its institution on 17 October 1938 until the Decree of 19 June 1943, the first type of the Medal “For Battle Merit” was awarded. The medal was fitted with a rectangular suspension mount featuring a slotted frame in the lower section. The mount was covered with a red ribbon. The upper end of the ribbon folded over the top edge of the mount, while the lower end passed through the slot at the bottom. In the first variant, the ribbon was secured to the mount by means of a thin quadrangular plate with a central hole and four prongs along the edges. In the second and subsequent variants of this type, the ribbon was secured by a quadrangular plate with a central hole (without prongs) and a small hexagonal nut. Variant 1: Threaded post diameter: 3 mm, made of copper. Diameter of the screwback nut: 18 mm. The ”N” symbol appears before the serial number. Both the ”N” symbol and the serial digits are engraved by hand with a burin. The soldered suspension loop at the top of the medal has an outer diameter not exceeding 5 mm. The letters in the word ”CCCP” are filled with enamel. The enamel layer is thick, with its upper surface level with the surface of the medal. On the reverse side of the suspension mount there is a threaded post and a round screwback nut for attachment to clothing. The medals loop is made of silver and is soldered to the medal. The serial number is located horizontally at the lower part of the reverse. Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
