Two Early WWII Soviet Russian War Medals - Combat Services and For Valour - Two Early WWII Soviet Russian War Medals 1. Medal For Valour. Very early medal of type 1, varaition 1 with replaced suspension. Number 1047 Originaly The medal was fitted with a rectangular suspension mount featuring a slotted frame at the bottom. The mount was covered with a red ribbon. The upper end of the ribbon folded over the top edge of the mount, while the lower end passed through the slot at the bottom. In the first variant, The serial number is preceded by the ”N” symbol. Both the ”N” symbol and the digits are engraved by hand with a burin. The letters are filled with enamel. The enamel layer is thick, with its upper surface level with the medal field. 2. Combat Services Medal. Number - 121700. Type 1, Variation 3. The Medal ”Combat Services” was instituted to reward active contribution to the success of combat operations and to the strengthening of the combat readiness of the armed forces. The Medal ”Combat Services” is awarded to servicemen of the Soviet Army, the Navy, the border troops, and the internal troops, as well as to other citizens of the USSR. It may also be awarded to persons who are not citizens of the USSR. The suspension mount and screwback nut are identical to those of the previous variant. The threaded post may be made either of silver or of bronze.The serial number is applied by stamping. The symbol preceding the number is absent. Early examples of the third variant have a suspension loop of small diameter (not more than 5 mm). Later examples feature a loop with an outer diameter of approximately 5.25–6.25 mm. The letters in the word ”CCCP” are filled not with enamel but with lacquer. The lacquer layer is thinner, and its upper surface is usually positioned below the level of the medal field.
