Two WWII Russian Soviet Orders -Order of Patriotic War, 2nd class and Order of Red Star - Two WWII Russian Soviet Orders -Order of Patriotic War, 2nd class and Order of Red Star Order of Patriotic War, 2nd class. Number 481880, Type 2. The badge of the order itself consists of two parts. The first, main part is a ten-pointed silver star (the enameled and the radiant five-pointed stars are combined into a single element). The second part is the applied golden hammer and sickle. The third component can be considered the round fastening screw plate, 33 mm in diameter, which screws onto a silver threaded post soldered in the center of the reverse. There are no inscriptions on the screw plate. On the reverse there are two copper rivets holding the hammer and sickle. The rivets are located in the center of the reverse, on either side of the threaded post (at approximately 2 and 8 o'clock positions). Orders of the Patriotic War Second Class (Type 2) were produced in large quantities at three mints and one factory. Therefore, there exists a large number of types and varieties, the systematic classification of which is quite difficult. Previously we presented a classification based on the character of the reverse surface (”star”, flat, concave, etc.). At present this classification has already lost its relevance. For example, the same ”star” reverse (expressed to a greater or lesser degree) occurs within the serial number range from 30 to 700 thousand. Early Order of Red Star. variant 3. Number 158656. This early variation has a round base ”heel” of the screw. Variant 3. On the reverse there is the mint mark ”MONETNYJ DVOR”, stamped in two lines. Sub variation 4. Badges of the fourth variety were produced at the Moscow Mint in 1942–1943. The mint mark is located slightly below the base of the upper ray of the star. The word ”MONETNYJ ” is curved upward in an arc (concave). In the word ”MONETNYJ ” the dash above the last letter rises above the surface of the word.
