THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) CURRENT RIVER STUDY
Thomas Hart Benton (Missouri, 1889-1975)
Cave Springs Current River, Missouri
Early 1960s.
The tempera study of the entrance to Cave Springs, a scene along the Current River in southeastern Missouri, is signed lower right.
Benton finished a major painting titled Cave Spring in 1963. The composition includes this same view to the far left. The work is painted on Whatman illustration board from the early 1960s.
Provenance: Private Kansas City, Missouri collection, acquired from the estate of Vincent Campanella by the current owner. The Campanella estate held more than 100 works on paper and approximately 12 paintings by Thomas Hart Benton. Correspondence from Rita Benton indicated that the parcel was given to Campanella in consideration for his assistance in completing Benton's Country Music Hall of Fame mural following the artist's death. This study will be included in the Thomas Hart Benton Catalogue Raisonné.
