Most artists in America embraced abstraction after World War Two. Louis Schanker was on the early side abstraction in the US as a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group in 1936. He was involved with the WPA around that same time and later, as a teacher who emphasized abstraction and experimentation with his students, influencing a generation of painters.
