AARON PYLE (1903-1972) EGG TEMPERA ON ARTIST'S BOARD - Aaron Gunn Pyle (Nebraska, 1903-1972) Rail Cars and Snow Third quarter of the 20th century. The view of windswept, snow-covered terrain below a low winter sky is punctuated by the figure of a hunter, a rabbit and weathered rail cars. Signed lower right front. Aaron Gunn Pyle was a student and close follower of Thomas Hart Benton. His compositions are almost always arranged in the Spiral Organization Benton outlined in his 1920s essay ''The Mechanics of Form Organization in Painting.'' This was Benton's preferred method of organizing forms in spiraling movements around a real or implied vertical pole, creating a sense of energy and dynamic motion in his compositions. Pyle's paintings display this approach to painting, almost to a fault, except for this one. Panel measures 6.25 x 10.5, frame is 14.25 x 18.75 inches.
