PHIL STARKE (BORN 1957) LARGE KANSAS FLINT HILLS O/C - Phil Starke (Born 1957) Burning Fields, Flint Hills Late 20th Century The large sunlit oil on canvas composition is signed lower right front and titled verso and displayed in a fine custom carved frame. Kansas' Flint Hills region is an ecologically significant region of unplowed tallgrass prairie located in the eastern-central part of Kansas, quite rich in biodiversity. Scenes of burnings like this help to maintain that biodiversity and have taken place for centuries, if not millennia. The smoke, and sometimes the flames, can be seen for miles and often intrigues non-natives passing through on the state's highways. Phil Starke is a prolific and, obviously, very capable landscape artist renowned for his evocative oil paintings of the American landscape. Canvas measures 30 x 40 with a framed size of 36.5 x 46.5 inches.
