The work was purchased directly from Benjamin Chee Chee in Montreal in 1973. Chee Chee is widely recognized for his elegant, minimalist depictions that remain fundamentally connected to traditional indigenous art, both in style and subject matter, despite the artist's modernist approach. His works are held in the National Gallery of Canada and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
