WUANITA SMITH (1866-1959) WHITE LINE COLOR WOODCUT - Wuanita Smith (1866-1959) New Birthday Clothes, Hopi Girl Circa 1930. This rare color woodcut print is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left. Unframed and in very good condition. In general, white line color woodcuts are rare and highly sought after. This particular image is also quite rare and of desirable subject matter. The 'white line' technique, or Provincetown print technique, is a distinctive printmaking method that Wuanita Smith was recognized as having mastered. Not often seen, this unusual technique involves a single block of wood carved with grooves cut between the areas of color which allows the artist to apply specific colors to different areas of the print. The grooves create the white lines that are void of color. Image measures 12 x 9.5, sheet is 16 x 11 inches.
