PAUL JUCKOFF-SKOPAU (1874-1936) GERMAN MILITARY TRIBUTE - Paul Juckoff-Skopau (1874-1936) Treuschwur (Pledge of Allegiance) 1938 The patinated metal figure of a German soldier giving the traditional two-fingered gesture (a salute that dates to ancient Greece) indicating one's pledge of loyalty, presumably to the German Fatherland. He cradles a broken sword in his arm lettered Dies illa. and stands on a circular base bearing the artist's signature and the title Treuschwur (Allegiance). The tribute is thought to refer to German soldier sacrifice in WW I. The front panel of the circular base is lettered Figur vom Kriegerdenkmal in Artern a. Kyffhauser von Juckoff-Skopau in the casting. There is a hand-engraved inscription added to the top of the base in German that translates to 1st Company Training Pioneer Battalion IV Artillery Regiment 1938. The material is bronze patinated metal of unknown content. Measures 22 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches.
