Aaron Bohrod (1907-1992) Exotic Dolls Mid 20th Century The trompe-l'Å“il still life depicts seemingly animated WPA Project type dolls masterfully depicted with shadow and light on their costume folds in undulating poses against a salvaged wood backdrop with pin-up girl (doll). The artist's signature is depicted centrally as a paper label on wood. The faux paper label is cleverly depicted as if a screw was previously driven through its upper edge. The work is further signed and titled verso. Aaron Bohrod (1907-1992) was a noted American artist renowned for his mastery the trompe-l'Å“il painting technique, a term that translates form French to English as 'optical illusion' or 'to deceive the eye.' He initially gained recognition as an artist for his social realism genre scenes in the 1930s. After the war, he transitioned to the trompe l'oeil style of which he is an obvious master.
