Edmund D. Lewandowski (1914-1998) - EDMUND LEWANDOWSKI (1914-1998) EXHIBITED OIL ON CANVAS. Edmund D. Lewandowski (1914-1998) Transfer Station 1986 The precisionist vignette from a petroleum processing complex is signed and dated lower right, the title is found on labels verso from H.V. Allison Galleries and Keogh & Riehlman in New York. This work appeared in the exhibition Edmund Lewandowski Fifty Years of Painting at H.V. Allison Galleries and the Greenville County Museum of Art, 1990. Edmund D. Lewandowski was a WPA muralist best known for his highly detailed depictions of industrial scenes, machines and urban architecture, .''as representative of our culture as temples and sculpture were of the Greek.'' he once said. There are interesting similarities between this composition and the Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) Bauhaus kinetic sculpture titled Light Prop for an Electric Stage from 1930. The vertical rectangle, the perforated metal, the tubular framework, the angles and even the light fixture are themes of Moholy-Nagy's sculpture. The intersecting angles in Lewandowski's composition are also reminiscent of Moholy-Nagy's Telephone Pictures from the early 1920s when he was an instructor at the Bauhaus school of art, architecture, and design. Edmund Lewandowski attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, a school that, similar to the Bauhaus, valued craftsmanship and technical skill in art with an affinity for structured, machine-inspired aesthetics for modern society. He almost certainly would have known Moholy-Nagy's important constructivist sculpture. Renewed interest in the Bauhaus School explains the replica Light-Space Modulator from 1970 pictured here courtesy of Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin. Photograph: Fotostudio Bartsch Bauhaus.
