Dan Christensen (1942-2007) Jackflash 1983 The vibrant whorl on a shimmering ground is signed and titled by the artist verso above a label from Doug Drake Gallery, New York. Dan Christensen was born in Cozad, Nebraska in 1942. Almost immediately after graduating valedictorian in the Kansas City Art Institute class of 1964, he moved to New York. Like Jackson Pollock, he attended a school with a strong figurative painting tradition but later turned to abstraction and experimental abstract painting in New York. Deploying newly developed types of paint and innovative techniques, Dan Christensen created his own brand of lyrical abstract painting that earned him swift critical acclaim. The famous art critic Clement Greenburg later described him as 'one of the painters on whom the course of American art depends.' His level of output and importance as an artist resulted in a number of exhibitions and retrospectives including Dan Christensen: Forty Years of Painting organized by Rachael Blackburn Cozad at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in 2009.
