Louis Schanker (1903-1981) Cornfields Circa 1940 The exuberant oil on canvas with unusual etched detail is signed lower right front and titled verso on the circa 1940 label from Willard Gallery in New York. The work is displayed in an outstanding pickled wood frame of the period, presumably the original. Louis Schanker embraced abstractionism early on. During the 1930s, he became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group which played a crucial role in promoting abstract art in the United States. He later served as a graphic arts supervisor for the Works Progress Administration, where he oversaw the creation of public murals and prints. He himself completed murals for radio station WNYC and the 1939 New York World's Fair. Canvas measures 24 x 30.25 with a framed size of 32 x 38 inches.
